How It Started

Made in USA Certified® was created in 2008 after speaking with manufacturers all across the Nation on the obstacles they faced competing against imports.  Domestic manufacturers repeatedly stated that there was surprisingly limited oversight and enforcement when it came to companies claiming a product was ‘Made in USA’ or ‘Made in America’ which led to misleading imagery on product packaging and marketing claims as well as outright fraudulent claims. Finding that there was indeed no universal certification standard identifying USA-country of origin marketing claims on products and that many consumers, like themselves just “assumed” that there was a national standard or process verifying these claims.

Additionally, consumers were being inundated with media coverage on the crisis caused by contaminated products entering the United States. This is due to the fact that the countries that export their products into the United States do not have the same health, environmental and regulatory oversight, safety standards or labor laws.

Furthermore, manufacturing plants had declined sharply in the last decade, shrinking by more than 51,000 plants, or 12.5 percent, between 1998 and 2008. Between June of 1979 and December 2009, a staggering 8 million jobs were lost in just 30 years.  These stable, middle-class jobs had been the driving force of the US economy for decades and these losses have done considerable damage to communities across the country. Ghost towns started to litter our American landscapes while chained and boarded up factories were the “new normal”.

Something needed to be done.

Seeing that the plethora of misleading ‘Made in USA’ images and claims were doing the true US manufacturers and producers a serious disservice.  They felt that there was a dire need to help protect the truthful, verifiable ‘Made in USA’ claims from the misleading ones. The consumers/retailers have a right to know where their products are coming from and that the country of origin marketing claims on those products are truthful and verifiable.

The solution was to create a credible independent third party supply chain audit process where a manufacturing company’s supply chain was completely verified and then certified, thereby creating much needed transparency, accountability and truthfulness in the marketplace for ‘Made in USA’ and ‘Made in America’ claims.  Hence, the Made in USA Certified® standard was born!
